The team at the Heart Clinic diagnoses and treats all heart conditions, including the rare and congenital disorders. We are one of the two tertiary cardiology centres in Estonia and the only one providing cardiac surgery to children.

Our experts are specialised in many cardiac conditions, including coronary artery disease, hypertension and dyslipidaemia, rhythm disorders, heart valve disease, congenital heart defects in children and congenital heart disease in adults, myocardial and pericardial disease.

We coordinate the care of advanced heart failure patients, including implantation of ventricular assist devices and, in co-operation with Helsinki University Hospital, heart transplantation.

In cooperation with other specialised units of the Hospital we utilise advanced technologies including non-invasive (e.g. transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, single-photon emission computed tomography, computed tomography angiography and magnetic resonance tomography) and invasive (coronary angiography) imaging.

We employ percutaneous interventions on coronary arteries, aorta and structural heart conditions, including coronary angioplasty, septal devices and trans-catheter aortic valve implantation. We also provide treatment for heart rhythm disorders (catheter ablation, pacemaker implantation, including the implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy). Our surgical programme covers all types of adult heart surgery (including coronary, aortic and valve disease, as well as LVAD implantation) and a considerable number of paediatric corrections.

At the Department of Cardiology, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Tartu we have research programmes in the areas of the biochemical and functional assessment of arterial damage in different disease models and of the epidemiology of myocardial infarction. We participate in a genome-first pilot screening programme for familial hypercholesterolemia of the Estonian Genome Center. We also co-ordinate the activities of the Estonian Myocardial Infarction Registry, an electronic database including all hospitalized cases of acute myocardial infarction in Estonia.
