The Internal Medicine Clinic incorporates both innovation and conservatism.

The Internal Medicine Clinic provides medical help in several specialty areas: internal illnesses, gastroenterology, endocrinology, rheumatology, allergology, nephrology, and infectious diseases.

The main contingent in the field of internal illnesses includes patients with differential-diagnostic problems as well as patients with infections including sepsis and patients with unknown temperature aetiology.

Since 2001, the new direction of the internal department has been enzyme substitution treatment of Fabry disease – the department being the only place for treating such patients in Estonia.

The gastroenterology department is the leading gastroenterology centre in Estonia; the endoscopy cabinet of the Internal Medicine Clinic is the biggest in Estonia by the number of procedures performed.

The endocrinology department is the biggest centre of endocrinology in Estonia.

The rheumatology department has focused mainly on out-patient medical help in recent years. Since 2007, biological treatment has also become more accessible for arthritis patients in Estonia.

The nephrology department is the only professional centre in Estonia that uses all methods of nephritic substitution treatment. In cooperation with transplantologists, the centre is active in the field of nephritic transplantation as well as pre- and post-surgical treatment. The haemodialysis satellite cabinet in Valga Hospital has been operating successfully. It represents a new model where haemodialysis patients come under the surveillance of the clinic’s nephrologists and receive their treatment outside the hospital.

The aim of the infectious disease field is isolating and treating patients who need to be treated in hospital.

In addition to the development of the profession, the Internal Medicine Clinic is the largest clinic by pre-graduate training capacity, where medical students are taught the basics of diagnostics and internal diseases.
